On Day 5 of our trip (Thursday, March 29th), we again visited Big Bend. We then left the park via the west entrance and headed south to Lajitas on the Rio Grande, where we entered Big Bend Ranch State Park.

One of the primary features of this Texas state park is the Camino del Río (the river road), a paved highway that winds about sixty miles between Lajitas and Presidio, paralleling the Rio Grande. In this photo, Mexico is on the left of the river.

The highway affords spectacular views of the nearby mountains and the surrounding Chihuahuan desert. The drive is often referred to as one of the most scenic in America—and we would agree!

As in Big Bend, the Rio Grande is an oasis in the desert, supporting considerably more vegetation—and associated animal life—than the nearby desert.
