University of Wisconsin
Before I became an elementary teacher, I was a teaching assistant at a college, the University of Wisconsin, in Wisconsin's capital city, Madison. I taught college students about politics and philosophy.

My first elementary class was at Zion Lutheran School in Chicago, Illinois, at 109th Street and Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard. I taught a combined 3rd and 4th grade class of twenty-three students. Zion Lutheran School

This is me inside my classroom, at the end of the year, getting ready to move everything out. All the kids are gone, and summer is here!

This is my mom and me outside the school, talking to some of my students. Mr. Hellmers with students

St. Paul Lutheran School
The next year, I taught at St. Paul Lutheran School, also in Chicago, at 76th Street and Dorchester Avenue. I taught a class of thirteen 4th and 5th graders.

Since our school was so small, there were only three other teachers besides me in the whole school! One class was Preschool, Kindergarten, and first grade. Another was 2nd and 3rd grade, mine was 4th and 5th grade, and one was 6th, 7th, and 8th grade! These are the three other teachers--Ms. Schoppa, Mrs. Dixon, and Miss Shuman.

St. Paul classroom This is my classroom at St. Paul. With only thirteen kids in the class, we had plenty of room for the desks! Here is one of my students standing next to my desk.

St. Paul last day On our last day of school, we had an assembly in the basement, sang some songs, and said good-bye for the summer.

In August of 2005 I started teaching fifth grade at Thomas Jefferson Elementary School.
