This is us watching the kindergarten kids perform their songs at the school we visited. Notice Mai on the right, one in a long list of intrepid guides.

I guess this is funny because it is a "designated tourist restaurant." I think we all got a little tired of being led around by the nose in China, and tried hard to break away every now and then to see what we thought was "the real China."

On Christmas Day, 1993, a few of us rented bikes and rode around Tiananmen Square in Beijing. Keith chose to ride on the back fender instead of the seat.

A bunch of clowns, outside McDonald's in Beijing. I believe at the time this was the only one in China.

The steps we didn't climb up. At least most of us. If memory serves, there were a few brave souls who took the time and energy to walk all the way up. The rest of us rode the cable car.

One of our favorite Chinglish sayings. There was also "Don't throw something dirty on the floor" and "Don't spit on the floor", both from the train.

Anton, Amy, Rachel, Chris at the Great Wall.

Remember how cold it was on the day we visited the Forbidden City? Roger Moore was our audio guide for the day. In the background is the Hall of Supreme Harmony, with its eleven arches.

Derek! Can't you read the sign?

At our hotel in Beijing.
